The delivery I was waiting in for yesterday morning was a mattress topper for my bed, since I can't afford a whole new mattress just now. This one is "memory foam", a sort of hard foam that retains an impression for several minutes. Trying it out last night, I slept really, really well; admittedly I was very tired indeed, but that thing is damned comfortable. When you lie on it, your body sinks into the foam layer, but because it is quite firm, it holds you in place. The effect is rather like being an expensive artefact in one of those custom-built travelling cases. I'm still stiff after yesterday, so I will take a slow day today, then see how well I sleep this evening. So far, the only drawbacks I've found are that it smells a bit funny, which will presumably dissipate over time, and that, being three inches thick, it now makes my bed slightly too high to get into comfortably, so I will need a low footstool (not the small medical dictionary I used last night). Also, when I sit on the bed to put on my socks, it retains a worryingly large bottom-shaped dent for ages, reminding me of how far the diet still has to go.
