It was remarkably hot today - almost average for the time of year. Plan A had been to go to the Horniman Museum, but we ended up at the Wellcome Collection again, to catch the Heart exhibition. This was every bit as interesting as the rest of the place. No pictures allowed, though. It started with the Egyptian Book of the Dead and the heart of the deceased being weighed against the feather of truth, then worked its way through the actual physical heart, the spiritual heart (lots of Sacred Heart stuff) and fetched up with the artistic heart. There was a spectacularly detailed eighteenth century wax model of the inside of a human torso, gruesome film of open-heart surgery (pointed up by the soundtrack of a hellfire and blood sermon from Billy Graham), some charming valentines, and the promised heart-shaped stools, plus several holes in the wall at which you could hear suitable songs, including "Your Cheatin' Heart" and Stephin Merrit's "I Think I Need a New Heart".

Lunch was very tasty and relatively cheap, and the home-made fig roll was delicious. I recommend the cafe there for anyone who has to be at Euston - much nicer than anything in the station.

hearts, wellcome collection
