Let me preface this by saying that I don't go cruising/bar-hopping/whatever for sex; most of the people I've lain with are either close friends or people I've built a relationship with over the internet.
That being said, it's been my experience that you be as blunt with your potential partners as possible. Being a pansexual (but leaning more towards gay) trans man AND identifying as a Dom in the BDSM scene has made things difficult for me in that, when seeking partners, I'm often not taken seriously either because I'm trans or because I look "soft". Hell, a lot of gay cis men have accused me of being "a woman trying to horn in on [their] space". In some ways, however, I view sex as contract for which negotiation is to be made beforehand and thus, I ALWAYS lay down the law about where I draw the line during relations: I do not bottom; I will not be penetrated; etc... If they are flippant about this, or are insistant in pushing me into an uncomfortable situation, it ends right then and I leave/throw them out/etc.
I understand that the circumstances under which I have sex with other men may not be representative of your own or of your own preferences, but I wholly believe that whatever the situation, it is always best to firmly place those limits beforehand. If they are uninterested, then they probably aren't worth your time simply for their lack of respect.
It can be difficult to find partners (short or long term), but it isn't entirely impossible. Just hang in there and never lose hope! I sincerely hope this helps. Here's wishing you the best of luck!
