A friend of mine makes candles and he did that to help fund his surgery (he sold at flea markets, created a free website, and used Facebook to help advertise). There's always Chip-In, if you're comfortable being out on the Internet in a more public way and asking for donations; it's a good way to collect donations from friends who aren't local.
Last but not least, if you're active in your local LGBT community, you could go to the community for a benefit. Sell you crafts, get entertainers to perform and donate their tips, solicit local LGBT friendly businesses for donations to auction, have a 50-50 raffle, etc.
It sucks trying to save on your own- it took me 4+ years and I still ended up going to my community for help (my benefit raised $1200 in April 2009). It may take you some time BUT it's so worth it in the end. Don't give up!
