Name Change on Marriage (or Civil Union) certificate.. Is it Possible?

May 19, 2010 20:32

I married my wife in Connecticut on 1/1/07.   On 1/1/07 I was still legally female, pre-T and pre-op, pre name change/gender change, pre-everything.

On our civil union certificate (CT did civil unions until 2009 when Marriage became legal in the state for same-sex couples and all civil unions in CT are rolling over to marriages in October of 2010)

As of now because I am legally male, my wife and I aren't sure if we are actually married because we have a civil union until October and in CT straight couples aren't able to have a civil union because they were created solely for same-sex couples.

To make things even worse, I called the town clerk's office (the office that we obtained our civil union license from) and I was told that I am not able to change the name/gender on a marriage/civil union certificate and that I need to hire a lawyer.

Does anyone have any idea if that is correct?  I've searched the web for answers to this question and I haven't been able to find anything.  Since the civil union will roll over, I'm not worried about whether or not I'm married but I AM worried about having a certificate for the rest of my life that says the wrong name and gender on it.

Again, any help is appreciated both here and in PM.

Thanks again,
Jesse
