MLP cons vs Furry cons

It struck me this morning that BroNYCon, the 4th of which is taking place in Seacaucus, NJ this weekend, will most likely reach their cap of 4,000 attendees.

The largest Furry convention, AnthroCon, took from 1997 until 2010 for them to reach that level of attendance.

Is it valid to say that the MLP fandom is larger than the Furry fandom at this ( Read more... )

I tend to agree with this. Media fandoms like Pony fandom always spike fast because the potential fans are exposed almost simultaneously. Grass roots fandoms like furry grow much more slowly because the content is spread out over time and has multiple sources which don't all suddenly stop producing.

I love Pony fandom, but when the series ends it will inevitably begin to fade. Still, it will leave its mark on furry fandom and remain a vestigial presence indefinitely.

A fun TV show is a bit more enticing to the average person than something like furry, so it's not very surprising to me that the MLP fandom is bigger or will get bigger than furry. All fandoms based on shows/movies/books/etc. will always have an easy way to get more members, where furry is essentially an inner-personality type almost that makes it very hard for people who don't understand it to... well, understand it :P ( ... )

I think you're looking at just numbers and not other important factors: The growth and media popularity of furry from '97(Certainly not it's inception, but nobody knew about albany anthrocon). Hell, I didn't go to my first furry convention until I think their second year at the Adam's Mark hotel? And furry's only been growing the more media coverage we get.

MLP on the other hand, has enjoyed having a weekly television show, and mass exposure via the internet.

I don't think there are more Brony's than furries(there might be though, idk), but the people who go to Bronycon PROBABLy already know about conventions and/or attend other conventions and heard about the pony con in passing.

I can't picture MLP having the same sort of legs that furry has-- it's too limited in the type of stories that can be done, and too restricted by the media that owns it. When te show ends it will eventually fade back into a small, hard-core fanbase.

I do not see it having a long lifespan like furry cons. It does have a huge advantage of being on TV and a very wide audience that covers a large age range. If it does hit the magical 100 episodes for syndication, then things might change.

Not really sure if it has more fans then furry. There certainly are a lot more furry cons then MLP cons right now. I only know of about three major MLP cons and I'm sure there are smaller one popping up here and there considering the fan base. Plus, I know BroNYCon has one of the better GOH list as well.
