X-COM

As per request, I am posting a review of the X-COM series.

For those of you who don't know, X-COM is a sci-fi turn based strategy game, you take the part of the X-COM organization, empowered by the UN to defend Earth from alien invaders. You establish a base(s) around the globe and respond as various types of attacks take place. As you accuire aliens and their technology your R&D team can research things to give you access to new and fun toys. The bad news? There is no possible way to respond effectively to the invasion that will happen even on the Beginner setting. Instead you are expected to begin losing the battle at a slowly accelerating rate, this is part of the story. You will need to bring your research to levels where you know the nature of your invaders and the relation they have to each other, as well as the ability to make sufficient armour and armaments for your troops and a way to get them to the source of the problem. This last proves to be the most difficult as it can only be accomplished by assaulting an alien base and bringing back the base commander alive for interrogation. This wouldn't be SO bad if the commanders and leaders didn't look exactly the same as every other alien of their type. The end result is that you have to first FIND an enemy base, not an easy task by itself, then estimate based on the layout where the leader would be located, realizing that any group of aliens is likely weilding weaponry that is capable of killing your soldiers in a single shot even with the best armour available. The aliens will have the upper hand throughout the entire game until you finally manage to penetrate their origin base, here you get to go totally hog wild with the most devistating weapons at your disposal, FUSION MISSILES AWAY! =D

End talley: The difficulty is VERY high and it has a steep learning curve due to the lethality of the alien firepower, but the R&D system is solid and careful tactics and patience will win out more battles than not. Might not be your cup of tea if you like dominating the battlefield from the get go, but very nice if you like to work with excessive strategy
