There ARE no excuses for any action you do. The reasons are unimportant. You're deeds hurt people at times. And that is something you cannot change, nor can you make any mitigation for.
But you aren't trying to do that.
Understanding that, you cannot engage in self pity. Self pity is self destructive. It makes you worthless, resistant to change, and unproductive. That is not going to fix anything either.

I sense realization, and hints of greater wisdom. The wisdom of a man, and not a child, a boy.

The best advice my drill sergeant said to me was thus:
"Doing the right thing is not always easy. It's usually the harder choice. But just make the right decision..."
The part you will appreciate, is his closing.
"And if you fail today to do what is right, remember, you can always change that, by starting to make the right choice right now. That's all it takes. Just make the right choice."
