Last Thursday night's outing at the NGV was a great success - I got to dress Candice Bailey in 1930s glamourwear. And Glamour there was!
There were around 3,000 people there, many who looked fabulous - especially those who also were wearing lovely things from Circa. When you sell clothes for a living, seeing happy people wearing the items out and about is the very best thing.
The exhibition itself is amazing - I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who enjoys beautiful (and well designed) things from fashion to cars to jewellery to paintings to architecture to furniture and everything in between. That's what is so wonderful about a style movement: the impact on items large and small. Every home could have it's own piece of deco glamour.
It makes you realise how lacking our lives are in these qualities - I followed in Candice's wake as her personality and presentation opened every possible door amongst the assembled masses. It was a revelation watching as she blithely announced "I think I'll go and talk with
Peter Jago now!" despite not ever having met before, Peter (and everyone else) received her with rapturous attention and compliments. Before too long she was sipping champagne with Gerard Vaughn, the Director of the NGV.
Just goes to show what you can do with a good dose of confidence, a day at the beauty parlour and a glorious frock. Personally, I think the NGV should have paid Candice to do what she did - many commented that she "made the exhibition come alive for them". I like the comment of one awe struck and well dressed chap "Excuse me, you don't know me but I just have to say that you look stunning!".
