“Gabriel?”
He had to bite his lip to not let out a sound as he watched his lover look around for him with a frown on his face. He’d been laying in waiting behind a tree for the past ten minutes, his hat haphazardly tossed into a pile of snow, just waiting for him to find.
“God dammit, where the hell has he gone off to?”
He bit his lip harder at that as a bubble of laughter threatened to emerge, but it wasn’t time to reveal his hiding place. Not yet. He was still looking around for him to see where he could be, but nestled as close to the ground as he could, under the protection of a tree and a snow bank he was hidden from view.
The perfect moment came when Leonard bent over to pick up his hat. He only had a moment, and prayed that he wouldn’t slip up as he leapt up from his hiding place and barreled into him - knocking him back into a snow bank opposite of them.
“The hell!?”
He beamed and kissed him before he could get another word out, shifting in the snow so he could wrap his arms around him from where he was on top of him, only pulling back from the kiss when he felt him finally relax.
“What was that for?”
Gabriel looked at him and smiled, and leaned down to press another gentle kiss to his lips. He didn’t answer the question immediately, instead just watching him, his eyes filled with warmth and love, and another peck was placed on his lips before he moved off him, though only sliding to the side so that they were still pressed against each other, just side by side.
“I knew you wouldn’t lie down with me if I just asked you to.”
He looked up at him, a small, slightly smug smile on his face, and though the other rolled his eyes he knew it was in an affectionate way, and pressed himself closer to him before closing his eyes.
They laid together as the sun started to sink into the horizon, turning the sky shades of pink, yellow and orange, and Gabriel finally let out a soft sigh. His eyes were open now, so he saw Leonard cracking one open, and a small smile appeared on his face at it.
“You know what I love most about winter?”
He looked up at him, curious to see what the other would say. He just shrugged, though, looking relaxed for once, and that filled Gabriel’s heart with glee.
“It’s the quiet. Just listen…there’s hardly a sound. The occasional rustle from a bird in the trees, but other than that, it’s quiet. Listen.”
He reached up and pressed his finger to Leonard’s lips before he could say a word, removing it after a moment as he shifted closer again. All they heard in that moment was their breathing, and though perhaps it was mostly in his mind, he swore he heard the others beating heart.
“It is quiet. I’ve never noticed before…”
Gabriel couldn’t help but smile at that, and he pushed himself up before leaning down to kiss him.
“That’s because you’ve probably never taken the time to listen before.”
The sky grew rapidly dark after that, stars starting to dot the nights sky, and though he was cold (as he was sure Leonard was too), there was something comforting to it. It felt as though they were completely alone in the world, but all they needed for everything to be okay was each other.
“Come on, Gabriel, back to the cabin…”
He hadn’t noticed that he had almost drifted off to sleep where he was, cocooned next to Leonard in his own bubble of happiness and love. He let out a hum of contentment as he slowly got up, reaching down to help the other up as well, and a bubble of laughter slipped from him at his exaggerated groaning.
“Don’t laugh at me, Gabriel. I’m an old man.”
Another bubble of laughter at that, and he quickly moved to kiss him again, nipping at his lower lip even. He wordlessly took his hand and started to walk back to their cabin, a steady stream of smoke rising from the chimney.
“I love you, Len.”
He smiled at the others slightly confused look, it was a random outburst after all, but instead of making some comment as he normally would, Leonard was instead the one to initiate a kiss this time - pulling him close and then resting his forehead against his.
“I love you too.”
