Strikethrough '07: The Aftermath

Jun 01, 2007 19:14

So last I checked, fandom-counts is up to almost 30,000 members. That's 30,000 LJers in FandomLand. I have never seen fandom this united about something, this wankerrific, and I am so very amused by the turn of events.

Also, in a gesture of good will, teh LJ overlords have restored pornish-pixies and other fiction communities. I'm still a bit apprehensive about what CAN happen after StrikethroughGate because seriously, if these people could dance around the whims of a neo-conservative group such as WFI and not have a specific plan of action, with all the nice specifics that won't get innocent people shot... I just don't know. They had better learn from their mistakes and NOT pick on those who are merely interested in deviations.

These links were culled from metafandom for the enlightenment of you all. Always nice to know what happens in the aftermath of a debacle and the much-awaited follow through which may spell disaster, change, or something good/bad altogether.

Here is fandom-lawyers' Index of Discussions re the Community/Journals Deletion.

Somebody wrote a letter to Mr. Ellis and was replied to. All in good faith:
An Open Letter To Warren Ellis. by cheezdanish
"People can get behind an idea like that, maaaaaan....but then don't realize until it's too late that their Innocent Warrior is calling for the silencing of all forms of expression in the name of protecting an unknown quantity."

So Warriors for Innocence are apparently after LGBT too (WTF?! WELL HELLO queer people! That just scares me!)
Meet the people who run WFI by cussedness
"The don't intend to stop with the pedophiles. They are after the GLBT community also. They are after the anti-war protestors. They think that gays promote rape."

Regarding Mr. Barak talking to the media instead of his paying customers; though he finally issued an apology at the news section:
Six Apart Finally Responds. And it's more insulting than I would have imagined. by cordelia_v
"Turns out that these purges were not done to protect against (imaginary) legal liability. Contradicting (and undercutting) his own Abuse Team's explanations, the Six Apart CEO explained that he just doesn't want the purged communities or users in LJ, at all."

Protection and censorship on the side of those who err and other things:
Hello, fandom. Nice to meet your fanatic side. by mcdoh1902
"If we, as fans, as one large conglomerate fandom, actually decide to sue LJ/Six Apart, wouldn't that simply be damaging ourselves?"

A little bit more about free speech and LJ's actions over HERE.

Here are a bunch of useful links, math, etc regarding StrikethroughGate '07 and LJ in general:
LJ: people, it's made of peopleeee, or Strikethrough 2007
"We need numbers on how many of those fandom journals paid, and how many paid members operate fandom journals. Of course the numbers won't be solid."

As always, keep informed! =) And go have a clicky at fandom-counts, if you're a member of fandom and haven't been counted!

EDIT: *snicker* And LOOK at what the Froggy found:

Title: A New Sheriff in Town
Author: airspaniel
Fandoms: LJ media relations/witchhunt/the death of my own soul
Pairing: 6A/LJ
WARNINGS: contains fairly graphic depictions of dubiously consensual intercourse between an adult and a minor. No incest... this time. Sorry gang. ^_^ Also, this is a work of FICTION. Don't be a moron.

EDIT 2: A narrative of what happened; pretty much the only narrative out there I think.
