I have spent the weekend on a trip from South Wales to the Orkneys, via Lindisfarne and Hadrian's Wall, Eilean Donan, St Magnus Cathedral, the Italian Chapel and the Ring of Brodgar. And all without leaving the house. In other words, I watched
Oliver's Travels all over again. It stars Alan Bates, Sinéad Cusack, and Bill Paterson, and some other fabulous actors, and is written by Alan Plater (whose work I love). It is
witty, whimsical, glorious stuff- full of words to get drunk on, said by actors with voices to get lost in, and with 'sets' to make you weep. I want to walk down the aisle of the ruined cathedral on Lindisfarne. I want to stay in that B&B nestled by Hadrian's Wall, and see the firelight reflected on the ceiling as I burrow beneath the covers and hear the marching feet of a Roman legion pass by in the night. And then wake up to a plate of bacon and eggs, cooked by Mollie Sugden (in a lovely role as the landlady- vale, Mollie); before tramping off along the wall that trails through the haunted countryside. *sigh* And pay homage to the stonemasons, and walk around the Ring of Brodgar, and... Oh well, you get the drift. It was good, too, to see Charlotte Coleman; who died way too young.

Somewhere along the road from South Wales to the Orkneys, I detoured to see
French and Saunders, in their first and last Australian tour. It was lovely just to see them on stage in person, to watch snippets of some of their work over the years, and to enjoy their repartee as they scored points over which of them was the greater comedy goddess. They are BOTH awesome! And if laughter is a tonic, there were lots of people benefitting from the F&S variety. Bless them for the memories; thank goodness for their dvds; and long may Dawn and Jennifer continue to work their magic as they go their separate ways.

I am just home from Harry Potter. I enjoyed it as a film, and was totally caught up for the 3-odd hours, which passed by without any clock-watching or fidgetting at all. Now I have a wish to read the book again, and also Deathly Hallows once more. *adds to queue*

And now? Enough for now.
Adieu, mes amis.
