We've been able to open the windows a few time so far and the birds, squirrels and rabbits are making an abundant re-introduction to the Northern Climes here in Wisconsin. The upshot of all of this is that the cats are in a frenzy of over-stimulated joy. My big male, Blackie, has been on Bird Patrol almost continually for the past two weeks. He only takes downtime from his strenuous shifts to eat and get a bit of sleep. He is assiduous in his duties, making his way from window to window. War Games stepped up to actual hostile action, however, with the advent of a stray cat that has been sauntering by the house from time to time. The alert went to Def Con Charlie this evening as the foreign intruder made it's way into the inner perimeter of the yard. Major Blackie was instantly ready to lay down his life in defense of his country (aka our house) but the threat was diffused before that happened.
Only once before have we hit Def Con Delta, when the insurgent actually had the temerity to try to attack Blackie through the screen in the kitchen window. I thought someone was being murdered in the middle of the night. It wasn't pretty. Scared the SHIT out of me. Corporal Digger, Major Blackie's sister, provides some back up but I'm afraid there is a dishonorable discharge in her future for cowardly conduct. As long as she has Bird Patrol, Rabbit Recon or Squirrel Watch, she is fine. Anything beyond that and she retreats in fear for the bunker behind the couch. Sad.
