MEGA Manga Sunday

I have read SO MUCH STUFF over the last two weeks I can't hardly believe it. What follows are some tiny cover art images and some mercifully brief reviews of what I've read.

Absolute Boyfriend by Yuu Watase. Vol. 1.

Riiko, is a girl who can't get a date. One day she runs into a strange salesman who gives her a link to his website where you can buy a robot boyfriend. She signs up for the three day trial period but winds up falling in love with him. But can the guy across the hall live down this hot new boyfriend of hers, when he's madly in love with her too?

Boys Be... by Itabashi Masahiro. Vol. 1.

Vignettes of high school boys falling in love and breaking out of their shells in a land where the girls are the ones who encourage the guys to take life by the reins. Funny, sexy, a little risque. Different from the Anime, which was syrupy sweet, the manga is a lot more wild.

Boys over Flowers by Yoko Kamio. Vol. 1.

Think "Pretty in Pink." High school clique drama leads one girl, Tsukushi Makino, to stand up against the "flowery four" the most gorgeous, and nasty, boys on campus. But one of them is different and she finds herself falling for him. Can she stand the torture of these unbelievably wealthy and unbelievably nasty people just to be with him?

Chobits by Clamp. Vol. 1.

Hideki, is a young man just scraping by to get into college who finds a beautiful robot girl in a dumpster (of course in this world robot girls abound!). He takes her home only to find out that she doesn't have an operating system, but how is she operating without an OS? Is she one of the experimental and possibly dangerous robots known as "Chobits?"

Deathnote by Tsugumi Ohba. Vol. 1-12.

Light Yagami is an extraordinary young man, with a bright future ahead of him in law enforcement. But his life takes a drastic turn when he picks up a notebook belonging to a Shinigami death god. Now Light wields the power of life and death, what will he do with such a responsibility? This is an amazing series, I read the whole thing over these two weeks, and that's really saying something.

Fake by Sanami Matoh. Vol. 1.

Two cops in NYC find that they have more in common than they realize, and they start to fall in love with each other. Of course they're both men in this world, and the ridiculous crime scenes that they deal with are only pretense for the getting it on scenes that we're all waiting to read.

Hikaru No Go by Yumi Hotta. Vol. 1-3.

When Hikaru is cleaning out his grandfather's attic he finds an old Go board, stained with blood. Hikaru is then aware of the spirit of Fujiwara-no-Sai, an ancient Go master who wishes to play once more through Hikaru. Absolutely fascinating series, and you learn how to play Go as you read, which is a bonus.

Negima by Ken Akamatsu. Vol. 1.

Negi Springfield is a ten-year-old wizard in training from Wales. As part of his Magister Magi training he is sent, for whatever reason, to teach in a Japanese girls boarding school. And the reason I think, is panties, because Negi's magic has a tendency to make girls clothes disappear or explode. Negima is a very strange, very ecchi series.

Otogi Zoshi by Narumi Seto. Vol. 1-2.

Otogi Zoshi takes place in the Heian period, when the imperial courts were at their peak. Hikaru-no-kimi is the valiant daughter of one of the most powerful palaces in the country. She sets out on a quest on behalf of her brother, and winds up learning more about the darker side of her family. The manga gets kind of confusing, and the anime is much easier to follow.

Paradise Kiss by Ai Yazawa. Vol. 1.

Yukari lives the typical life of a high school girl, with school, and cram school, and longing for the cute boy in her class. Well, that all gets turned upside down when she runs into some strange people from the art school down the road! They want her to be their fashion model, because they're starting a brand new line and think she's got the stuff. But can she turn her back on school for this? What will happen to her life?

Parasyte by Hitoshi Iwaaki. Vol. 1.

One unsuspecting night, an alien life form fell to earth. These aliens took over some people's brains, but Shinichi caught his alien in time and instead it took over his hand. Trying to understand human culture, as well as trying to understand itself Migi, the alien parasite in his hand, starts studying. But what about these violent murders happening all over the planet? Horror, bordering on Hentai

Rurouni Kenshin by Nobuhiro Watsuki. Vol. 1.

After the downfall of the Shogunate, turn of the 20th century, the samurai classes were disbanded and various things happened to those who remained. Kenshin was a samurai, one of the deadliest of all. But he has renounced his violent past, and uses his sword only to help the less fortunate. Funny, serious and conveying a moral lesson, Kenshin is a classic.

Trinity Blood by Sunao Yoshida. Vol. 1.

In the far future when vampires roam the earth, the Vatican has at its disposal the most powerful weapon of all, the next phase of evolution! Esther is a simple nun who crosses paths with the famed father Abel Nightroad. Abel is the most powerful vampire hunter there is, because he's a vampire who feeds on other vampires.

Yotsuba&! (Yotsuba to!), by Kiyohiko Azuma. Vol. 1.

SO SWEET! Yotsuba is a precocious little girl with green hair and a never-ending supply of energy. Her mini adventures in her neighborhood with her family and her neighbors are hilarious and adorable. I was laughing the whole way through. If you need a good laugh or just a dose of cuteness, get Yotsuba.
