Text in job ads!

(background: I am currently searching for a faculty job in biology, hence why I saw these ads)

Job ads for faculty positions - and many other ads - often include some text at the bottom describing equal opportunity employment and the like, at least in the States. Here are two examples:

"The Department of Biology is strongly committed to Penn's Action Plan for Faculty Diversity and Excellence and to creating a more diverse faculty (for more information see: http://www.upenn.edu/almanac/volumes/v58/n02/diversityplan.html). The University of Pennsylvania is an equal opportunity employer. Minorities, women, individuals with disabilities, and protected veterans are encouraged to apply."

This is pretty much the basic US minimum. [I don't even know what unprotected veterans would refer to?]

"UBC hires on the basis of merit and is committed to employment equity. All qualified persons are encouraged to apply. We especially welcome applications from members of visible minority groups, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, and others with the skills and knowledge to engage productively with diverse communities."

This goes above and beyond.

Which workplace would you find more welcoming? Do you think that making visible welcoming gestures to other minority groups benefits individuals with disabilities? Or do you think disability is something distinct from a minority group? How do you feel about "members of visible minority groups" - do you think this has implications for people with invisible disabilities?

work, diversity, employer, visibility, acceptance, respect, teaching, education, awareness
