So I went into office hours today to talk to my variable binding professor, who is a nice guy, very nice, and the class is very interesting, but...My presentation on the Syntax of Independence. And I have to give it in German. Now my German's pretty decent but I don't know if I'll be able to say things like "When you look at this example, it's clear that this is an instance of dependent identity because 'the boy' c-commands 'he.'" God help me Monday.
Furthermore I'm supposed to write a 20-30 page paper on a theory for relating the topic of syntactic dependent identity with semantic variable binding. I'm not really sure how I am supposed to do that. At all. Not true. I have some idea, but the coming task will be near-insurmountable unless I'm actively working on this like it's a full-time job. Which...is hard because right now I just want to go home, crawl under the covers and watch "Lost in Translation."
