I finally - finally! - got a phone call from a store that I applied at. This is the first time that this has happened to me since I started looking for work about a year ago. To my surprise, as I agonized over a list of crappy babysitting jobs on craigslist, the phone rang and a young woman on the other end said she would like for me to come in the very next day for an interview. Without any prompting from me! Without any phone calls where you try to sound nonchalantent about getting the job so they don't know how desperate you are.
The interview seemed to go fairly well. I told the woman about my brief experience at my mother's restaurant and my schooling. She told me she needed a busser for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of every week. She even went so far as to inform me about the uniform - white button up shirt, black slacks, and non-skid black shoes - with particular emphasis on never rolling up the sleeves of the uniform because you are hot. She detailed the duties I would be expected to perform. Everyone was very nice. I really hope I get the job. At the end of the interview she set me up for a second interview with the general manager later today. at four. All of this seems to point in a pretty positive direction.
This led to my grandmother telling me about her first job which I thought was kind of a cute story just because I could picture the sixties setting. She got a job as a car hop at a local A & W. She was very excited, of course, and she carefully got dressed in her uniform and left the house for her first day on the job. A bird pooped on her as she walked under one of the trees on her street. Being a hormonal teenager, she burst into tears and ran back into her house. Her mother laughed at her and cleaned her up. She was really careful going under those trees from there on out ;)
Anyway, everyone wish me lots and lots of luck.
