I was raised by a Trekkie. My mother was present for the very first Star Trek convention. She has her Starfleet Academy graduation certificate hanging below her Masters degree. Her first email address was "counselortroi98" (and she still uses it to this day). She imparted a love of genre entertainment, old-school scifi, and Trek in particular in me

I'm one of the few (?) people who never actually watched any Star Trek movie (or any of the tv series). But on New Year's Eve a friend and I sat down and watched the new one. She'd already seen it because she's a fan of Quinto, and I owned that DVd for too long but never got 'round to watching it. So we did. And the lens flares killed us. XD
But I really enjoyed that movie (I mostly bought it because everyone said it was good and because I love Zoe Saldana) and was very entertained. Also, thanks to a lot of Star Trek coverage over the years in every movie mag possible I also know quite a lot about that world, which is convenient. *g*
So, now I'm looking forward to that new movie, of course also because Cumberbatch is in it. :) He definitely seems to be in Bane!mode here. *g*
Yeah, there are a lot of comments about Sherlock and Star Trek fandoms not being able to work together? Why is that? What's so difficult about that? It truly baffles me, because I just think that people are perfectly able to love two rather different things at the same time. And I never got the hang of fandom and shipping fights.^^

The fandom wars are so frustrating. There's no reason whatsoever why they can't coexist, or why people who come for the Cumberbatch can't come to love and appreciate Trek in and of itself.

It seems some people just can't be happy and need something to argue about.
I can understand that it could be annoying for long-time Star Trek fans if there are a lot of newbies who ask questions with kind of obvious answers (as in, "Please just watch one or two other Trek movies!"), but then again - we all need to start somewhere! And I feel if more people welcomed the new fans and helped them (e. g. showing them FAQs or whatever) instead of being patronising and claiming they're no "true" fans because they came over for Cumberbatch, it would be so much better. Because then the new fans would be encouraged to look deeper into this fandom.
