The art of the opening credits sequence

Apr 07, 2014 22:34

My favourite shows, or the ones I consider best, don't necessarily have great opening credits sequences. Yet those sequences are often one of the great things of this golden age of television.

Last month, Hitflix did a list of the 25 best opening sequences but I don't quite agree with it.

IMO a great opening sequence tells you what the show is about, what its style(or tone) and 'verse will be, and is something creative that you have never seen before.

Here is my list of the best ones, that is my top ten:

First off, OZ and its tattoo session and oppressive and violent atmosphere.

Carnivale or when Tarots cards and paintings merge with footage from the 30's, foreshadowing impending doom:

Six Feet Under and its post-mortem montage that says it all:

The Wire and its five different opening credits sequences that were variations on the same theme, with 4 different covers of the same song:

The X-Files introduced our heroes and weird stuff. Here is a link for Youtube doesn't allow the vid to be embeded.

Dexter showing a killer's every morning routine:

Game of Thrones 's opening credits sequence provides a feeling of epics with its song and literally builds the fantasy universe!

The Borgias 's opening sequence was all about the sacred and the profane of course!

Last but not least, True Detective setting its Southern gothic mood, telling that this is going to be the views and journeys of two male protagonists, and giving previews of its terrific cinematography:
