So of course the big thing everyone is talking about today is tumblr banning all adult content

Most of the user base don’t seem to have a clue where they want to move too now, I’ve seen the most references to MySpace actually, although I presume that’s mostly people joking? :P Must admit I don’t hate the thought of this giving fandom the final push to move away from tumblr, but nobody seems to have much of an idea of where they want to go ( Read more... )

People seem to want to move to pillowfort which is still in a closed beta, so that's not really possible at the moment. Honestly, the reason why I never wanted to leave LJ for dreamwidth is the fact that you only have space for 15 user icons and you have to pay 1$ per extra icon or get a paid account for 35$ a year. I'm still on LJ for the icon community. For me, it seems silly to move, but I have lost some people on my flist after the last TOS update.

I came to LJ in 2007, so I honestly don't remember anything about the "big strikethrough" (I think that what it was called).

To be honest, I had no idea that there is soooo much porn on tumblr. I follow fandom blogs, either run by teams dedicated to one fandom or random blogs that share the same interests.
Nazis on the other I've come across, but tumblr doesn't seem to care about them.

Lol yeah I’m the exact same, it’s hard for me to consider leaving LJ for DW because over here I have a permanent account with over 200 icon spaces. DW feels like going backwards to only have space for 15, plus limits on other things like how many entries and comments you can subscribe too ( ... )

Last time I browsed the tags for the show Nikita, I did come across a massive closeup of some woman’s asshole :(
Ugh, that also happened to me with completely unrelated things. I barely go into tags anymore. The worst was probably trying to find blogs for the NBC show Good Girls.

I definitely learned to avoid the tags after that! Saying that, I’ve had the same thing on LJ a couple of times as well with communities being hacked and suddenly finding naked women all over my flist, although that was probably a couple of years ago now. I gusss we’re not even relevant enough to hack any more :P

I remember that! Now I occasionally just see adverts like "buy designer bags cheap" posted by bots.

I gusss we’re not even relevant enough to hack any more :P
Exactly lol

Just popping in to mention that you can have up to 500 icons at DW. I have them myself.

Also, this is a pretty good run down of what occurred in 2007.

Just a difference in amount of features and more per year.

That was a great gift alright! Yes, I think it's easy to take for granted features when you have them upfront. I got a seed account at DW when they opened so I don't need to worry about payments either, although there was an extra charge when they first offered the big icon upgrade about 5 years ago.

I'm not sure if I can really answer layout questions -- I expect it depends on which layout you've chosen. I know there are various adjustments that can be made regardless but I don't recall one specifically about margins (which might account for the extra space).

One thing that happened here on LJ is that my reading view no longer shows anyone's icons, I've no idea why :(

One easy way of using DW more I think would simply to be to post from there, since you can crosspost from there to here but not vice versa. It's as simple as ticking a box at the end of the posting form once you've set it up. That way you have more reason to browse your reading list there.

My readinglist seems okay on my phone actually, I suppose because it’s a smaller screen, but when I’m on my iPad there is sooo much empty white space on both sides of my readinglist so that the entries end up quite tightly squeezed in the middle. I think I just have the basic layout, I’ve have to look into it I guess, because that’s one of the things I find a bit off putting at the moment.

I am thinking of maybe cross-posting from next year, it’s just a question of balancing whether I want comments for the same entry in two different places or not...

Since I have a paid LJ account, I don't really want to pay for another account for the icons when the vast majority of the icon community is still here. If something would happen and everyone moved to DW, I'd just get a paid account over there.

Thanks for the link. I never actually bothered to look up what happened back then.
