Thinky thoughts about The Old Kingdom Trilogy

Jan 24, 2012 02:11

Finished my sort of annual rereading of The Old Kingdom Trilogy by Garth Nix yesterday, including the novella, The Creature in the Case.

It's left me totally wanting to write more fic and wishing that he'd finish Clariel sooner than 2013. Man. I want to know more about Chlorr. If I didn't know that book was in the works, I'd totally be considering working out my own version of her history. Mostly because the idea of an Abhorsen who becomes a Necromancer and eventually one of the Greater Dead is incredibly interesting to me.

As far as fic. I had started writing a story taking place after Abhorsen a couple years back, where Lirael gets the hand that Sam made for her. After rereading The Creature in the Case, I'm wanting to further explore Lirael's relationship with Nick and where it may eventually lead in this story. I'm curious about the effects of Orannis' power and Kibeth's power on him and how they interact with each other while he's in the Old Kingdom. Will Nick become a Charter Mage and partner with Lirael? (Yes.) And what role will he play in the development of the Old Kingdom as it moves on from the destruction of both Kerrigor and Orannis?

I'm also really curious about the Southerlings that survived Orannis and Sam had promised land in the Old Kingdom. Will they continue with their beliefs and superstitions despite what they have seen and what they will continue to see living in the Old Kingdom? Will some of them start to grow a part of the Charter? Will they begin to intermingle with the existing population of the Old Kingdom and help bring the kingdom to it's former glory? What about their experiences prior and during Lirael and Abhorsen? The war in their home that made them escape to Ancelstierre, then the trouble with the Our Country party that forced them to the Wall and some of them even past it. What did they go through when they were faced with Hedge and his Dead Hands, their former family members now basically zombies at his beck and call?

And finally I really want to write some meta around the end of Abhorsen where the Seven choose their bells in their binding of Orannis. What made each of them choose the bell they did? What does it say about their character? Is it only based from their superficial characteristics? Like Ranna being the sleepbringer and Touchstone being asleep for over a hundred years, like he said. Why did Lirael initially choose Astarael before hesitatingly adding Kibeth? Was it that she knew Dog was Kibeth? Or because she felt an affinity with Astarael, the sorrowful? Why did the twins choose Mosrael and Ellimere Dyrim?

All of this makes me really wish there was an active (if small) fandom around these books. Despite the impact Harry Potter has had on me and my absolute fannish glee for that series, it's this series that I love the most of any fantasy series I've read.
