Snowflake Challenge, Day 13

Jan 16, 2012 01:30

So... I'm skipping day 12 of the Snowflake Challenge, only because I couldn't begin to decide on what would be best to introduce someone to a fandom. I'm terrible at figuring that sort of thing out (which is why you'll probably never find a primer on my journal).

On to Day 13, then, of The Snowflake Challenge.

Day 13

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favourite interview, a book) and explain why you love it so much.

It's really hard for me to pick my favorite bits of canon, when I kind of love it all, good and bad in all my fandoms because it's what helped me fall in love with the characters. But I'll try my best. :)

Harry Potter
In this fandom there are two books I love the most. The Prisoner of Azkaban and The Order of the Phoenix. PoA is my favorite because of the introduction of Sirius and Remus as well as the whole Marauders era. Harry's era isn't really my favorite in the series. I love the older characters. I loved learning more about the Marauders and everyone else of their generation and PoA was really our first real taste of that era.

I loved OotP for the same reasons, more looks into the past, especially with Snape. Learning some more of Snape's history was more than I had wished for. And those pensieve scenes were the biggest gift ever for the Snarry part of fandom, which at that point I was very much entrenched in. Of course there was a lot I hated about OotP too, the same thing most of the fandom was upset about, losing Sirius. But even that managed to inspire so much fic and activity in the fandom.

OotP to me will always bring with it all the memories of the fandom activity that stemmed from it. So while PoA will always be my favorite book, OotP is definitely closer to my heart.

The Abhorsen Trilogy/The Old Kingdom Trilogy
Sabriel will always be my favorite of the trilogy. Even though I relate more to Lirael and love her story from her days in the library to her coming to her own as an abhorsen-in-waiting, I will always love Sabriel's story more. I'm sure it's because it's the first in the series and my first true look into this amazing world that Garth Nix created. But Sabriel's character, her strength and the journey she takes have held me spellbound since the first time I read the book in 1999. Since that first time, I've read Sabriel at least once a year, if not more. As the other two books in the trilogy came out, they were added to my yearly re-reading, but Sabriel is always the one I am most drawn to.

Merlin
Really this whole last season has been amazing for me. Merlin and Arthur's friendship is finally becoming the rock that it's going to need to be in order to withstand Arthur learning of Merlin's magic. Seeing that develop and Arthur learning to be the king Camelot needs as opposed to the king his father may have wanted him to be has been just what I've been wanting to see. And even though this season hasn't given us the big reveal I've been itching for, it's definitely made roadways toward it that hadn't been there before.

Other fandoms
My other fandoms, I really don't have a favorite bit of canon. Especially the movies, since really, it's all one big piece of canon. I mean, I could say my favorite bits of Inception were the scenes where Arthur and Eames were bantering. And my favorite bits of Tin Man were when we got to learn more about Glitch/Ambrose in any form. But that's really narrowing it down. I really love those canons as a whole.
