I had my first photojournalism class today, and my professor told us to carry our cameras EVERYWHERE because we will have a spot news assignment where we need to shoot something news-worthy that occurs spontaneously, like a car crash or a fire. I haven't been carrying mine lately because it's pretty clunky, but I decided to bring it to dinner just in case. On the way back to the Hojo after dinner, I spotted two fire trucks and a cop car zooming up the other side of Comm.Ave and stopping at the apartment complex next to ENG. I got extremely excited, whipped my camera out and set it up to get a good exposure, and ran to where the trucks were parked. Unfortunately for me, it turned out to be a false alarm, which isn't exactly news-worthy, and the firefighters left soon after. Still, the adrenaline rush was pretty amazing! After my initial freakout, while my mind was racing and trying to figure out what shutter speed and white balance to use and how to compose the shots I would've taken if it were a real fire, I actually felt like I knew what I was doing. I think I can handle this course, even ENJOY it. My main fear is having to get people's names after I take my shots because of the whole social anxiety garbage, but if I try to be as friendly as possible and use my camera as a buffer I'll eventually get the hang of it. My first assignment is to shoot a decisive moment of the Super Bowl on Sunday, and I've already thought of a few different possibilities. Apparently there will be a screening of the game at Agganis, and if it's on the Jumbotron I'm all set. If not, I think I'll walk along the Alternative Spring Break line to see if I can find some people watching the game on a laptop, check to see if they're showing it at BU Central, or try to talk my way into a pub with TV screens. This should be fun. :D
