There's many things I need to write updates about. I wanted to post a whole entry documenting my trip to Canada by bus.. cause that was quite an adventure...and other things. but for now here's the most recent development:
I got a second job. My current employer Burke Williams gave all their employees 8% pay-cuts as the last resort to keeping the company from going under. Although, I still think it's going to go under in a few months. Anyway. One of my co-workers quit Burke a few months back and has been much happier working at Spa Luce, located inside the Renaissance Hotel. She kept telling me that they desperately needed good front desk people at her spa and encouraged me to apply. So I finally had my interview with the spa manager last week, which went well. She asked me if I was also interested in working as a massage therapist there as well as front desk. I was definitely interested, I just thought they weren't hiring massage therapists. The manager Erika set me up with an appointment to come in and massage their head therapist in a few days. The spa is inside the hotel and you have to walk through doors that open up to a pool with lawn chairs and a bar. It was only my second time there and its kind of confusing so I asked the bartender where to go. He asked, "Do you work there?" I replied, "Not yet. I'm going in for my interview right now!" He wished me luck.
That massage interview went extremely well! I ended up massaging Erika, the one who had interviewed me and after I finished the massage I was feeling pretty confident that I gave her a good massage but was having trouble reading her. When I asked how she was feeling afterward she just replied with a simple, "Fine" After I exited the room and waited for her to get dressed. She came out and had been go back inside to discuss the massage. She told me "That was excellent!" and she said that she and her Spa Director would like to extend an offer of employment to me. That they think I would be a great addition to their team of therapists. YES! So she explained the pay rate to me ($32 an hour/per massage) <-(WAY more than I currently make)and front desk is $13 an hour. She also said that its good that I can do front desk to fill in but she really wants me on the massage team and she thinks I'll be much happier there anyway. Then she gave me some new employee paperwork and asked me to bring it back in signed the following day.
I walked out of the spa beaming, feeling so good about the whole thing. I felt like it was the best massage I'd ever given. The bartender who talked to me on the way in yelled to me, "How'd it go?" I yell back, "Good! I got the job! So I guess I'll see ya around."
Now the Spa itself is amazing. It's so different from Burke. It's white all over with a big futon in the waiting lobby with a huge fluffy pillows all over. It's got this incredibly zen feel to it. It's owned by a corporation like Burke is but it doesn't *feel* corporate at all, which is nice. The job is on call which is unfortunate because its not going to be that stable, as far as pay goes. That's why I'm going to continue working at Burke in addition to working there. The downside is that its in the heart of Hollywood at Hollywood Blvd /Highland Center and there is no parking! So it looks like I'll have to take the train to work since the station is just around the corner from the spa.
I'm just waiting for them to call me in to train. The manager said she would probably have me come in and train this week (either Wednesday or Thursday) I called and left her a message yesterday that I was following up with her to see when she wanted me to come in. I haven't heard anything back yet. So I'm just anxious to get in there and train. I have had hardly any clients at BW and therefore I'm making so little money right now its ridiculous. Hopefully I'll start at Spa Luce soon and be rolling in the dough. Haha!
