So yesterday I went to the library to pick up my book of ghost stories I had on hold and guess what? The only kanji dictionary the library has was there too! I have had this thing on hold since April, and I'd all but given up on it. I thought whoever borrowed it before me had stolen it or lost it or something. And yet it appeared!
I think I know what happened. This time of year is when the the second semester finishes at universities. Meaning whoever borrowed it was probably a student of Japanese. They didn't get their own kanji dictionary and instead held the library copy hostage all year. =( I'm relieved they gave it back at all (though they would have had to I guess or have their book access revoked until they paid for it) but still, I took Japanese for 3+ years without a kanji dictionary and so did a lot of my classmates. You don't really need one, and you definitely don't need to be a douche and hog the only library copy for months.
If it goes missing again next year I am going to scream. Maybe I should leave a note in it saying 'if you don't give it back this time I will cut you'.
