Merlin on Learning

Feb 07, 2009 20:03

Just finished listening to Lewis Lapham's lecture on education from TVO's Big Ideas series. Lapham ends with a quote from the novel, "The Once and Future King," by T.H. White, where Merlin is speaking to the future King Arthur:

Learning is the only thing that never fails, the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting.

Interestingly, that's not how the quote begins: ""The best thing for being sad," replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, "is to learn something."

Ah... Feeling better already. This actually reminds me of something that my father often says to me, albeit this quote puts it more in a poetic sense.
