If it snows as bad as it did up here, you can defer decision-making. Landlady does not notice crack, and person comes over on Monday to fix it.
If you're super-worried ;) about your landlady, send her on an errand or have your housemate distract her while all this is going on, and watch the fix-it proceedings from the window with a nice cup of hot chocolate.

I was standing on my stoop, and I noticed footprints leading from our snowed-in cars to the two nearest trees. WTF?
