29/52 - just tidbits

It's a super short day for me at work today! First, I got in late - about 9:15 - because of physical therapy. Then I have a dentist appointment at 11, so I gotta leave at 10:45 for that, and probably won't be back until 11:40. And then I have a lunch meeting at noon, so I'll be in my office for like ten minutes before I leave. And after lunch, I am going home so we can head out for Ithaca for our friends' wedding on Saturday. Do we think I should have just taken today off work?

Even I am getting slightly bored with a weekly "here's what I'm up to", so for this "one a week" post, I think I am just going to offer little random musings that have occurred to me over the course of the week. No super personal stuff in this one, so I'm not even f-locking it! (I have randomly gotten a bunch of visitors lately so I am trying to come up with nonlocked stuff, too.)

It says it's 87 right now, but it feels way the heck hotter than that. It's supposed to get up to 97. When I was in physical therapy this morning, they had the TV on, and there was a big fat "100" over Boston. (I always want to hug my physical therapist, because he is such a friendly kid.) It made me remember that summer I worked in the super's office, which got me free lodging while I caught up on some credits from not passing a class freshman year. The humidity and the close space were super brutal - especially since I started off my job with strep throat! But after that summer, I have come to kind of enjoy the heat and be able to put up with it. As a kid, it used to kill me. But now, I can deal!

In fact, I got home from tae kwon do last night, showered, and just lay down and read my book without the a/c - doing my part to avoid the brownout, I guess - though I did put it on to 76 before I went to bed, to take the edge off. Doing tae kwon do in over ninety degree heat without an a/c was pretty brutal. We usually take it really slow under those conditions, but last night we did a medium intensity class, and every so often, during a break, I felt like I could feel my heart working harder! I think when I get to be an old person, the biggest challenge to me will be adapting to new limits. Like, even now with my rotator cuff injury, I just don't remember that I can't or shouldn't do certain things, and then I do them and hurt myself (thankfully, not seriously yet). But I can see myself pushing too hard in the heat or cold at 83 and being in bad shape!

I think the heat outside makes the steam chimneys even more impressively hot-looking. Con Ed puts these orange plastic steam chimneys over manhole covers to funnel the steam out and keep people from getting hurt. (I guess water comes into contact with the main steampipe and then boils off or there could be leaks or something.) On a humid, brutally hot day - the kind where you walk a block or two and start to feel it- seeing that hot steam burble out of those chimneys gives me a whole new appreciation for how freaking hot the steam delivery is. (I think I might have linked to a photo of these guys before, but if you don't know what I'm talking about, here is one.)

We are headed up to Ithaca for the weekend for a wedding, as I might have mentioned. It's about a four hour drive, which is pretty long - I have filled out the paperwork to renew my learner's permit, finally, and might end up actually getting a driver's license in the next decade (although I've made it without one for the past three and a third, I am starting to really feel even worse that Himself has to do all the driving.) The one thing that really bugs me, though, is that the permit lasts, I think, nine months. The other ID you can get from the state is a New York State Non-Driver ID card. That lasts years, and is renewable by mail, unlike the permit. But NYS won't let you have both. If you get your permit, you gotta turn in your state ID. My guess is that they are worried you'll get two and give one to some teenager who will use it to buy booze or cigarettes or gamble or something. Right? That's the only possible explanation. But in my case, I really hate it, because I never have taken the driving test in time. Then I have an ID in my wallet which is expired - for years, causing me various amounts of trouble. And, I have to carry a passport when I travel, which is just one more thing I'm at risk of forgetting at home and then being totally screwed when I show up, whereas most people seem to be able to show up with their wallets, 'cause their driver's license is already in there. I would dearly love to be able to have both pieces of ID at the same time, to avoid these issues.

We're bringing Cards Against Humanity - a mutual set of couple-friends is coming, too, and one of them is in the wedding party, so we want to entertain the other. I haven't actually played it yet, though I've heard countless tales. Full report to follow! I am, of course, also bringing shoes and shirts to go running in. (I bought a zip-front running bra from Under Armour because the usual kind was too hard on the shoulder injury. The first one I bought was ok for tae kwon do, but didn't seem to offer enough support for jogging, which is pretty high-bounce. But I went down a size and the new one works like a dream! But the tag makes me laugh every time. I'm like, no way, dude.) But I can't for the life of me find my iPod. To me, it is about 800% easier to run, if I'm not running with somebody, if I have music to listen to, so, first world problem though it is, I am quite chagrined. I just brought it to Cleveland two weeks ago, and I know it's small and I know it's important to me for traveling, so I'm usually great about putting it somewhere safe and easy to find. Except this time. :( Any ideas? I checked the cracker box and the sock drawer already.

Finally, in case you're not otherwise connected to me, I feel obligated to post my new obsession: watching the Alaskan Bears salmon fish at these falls. I quite literally have this on on one screen (I have two monitors at work) all day long, and then do my work mostly on the other. I can't stop watching. Do you know, bears appear to be terrible fishers? I guess I didn't know much about bear motion before, but they are not really quick or graceful or efficient movers. Half the time they're losing the fish or getting bonked in the face by them, and it seems like a freaking miracle when they catch one! I love it. BEARS, YOU ROCK. But it is super addictive - I go home and watch it, too. So click at your own risk - I disclaim all liability for any current or future bear cam addiction.

I hope y'all have a great (BEAR) weekend!

one a week, new york
