One of three species of damselfly that bred in the pond, bringing our total of dragons and damselflies to at least 6 species breeding, out of 12 flying over the garden ( Read more... )

This time a common darter, observed laying eggs in the new pond. There is going to be a lot of competition for food next year.

The damn cat tried a spectacular leap to catch a large hawker, but failed miserably, almost falling into the pond.

The latest addition to our dragonfly list this year was a migrant hawker, bringing the total to 12 species in the garden this year - our highest annual total. Distant hawker dragonflies can be difficult to tell apart sometimes, but this one is smaller than the other species, and often settles obligingly on vegetation. On a related topic, while in New York Botanic Garden last summer B watched the outcome of a fight between a pair of dragonflies. At first they seemed to be dead, but the victor was laying on its back, having bitten the head off it's opponent, and was chewing away at the still twitching corpse.
