So my sister-in-law recc'ed me a book called The Hunger Games. Since my mom said she'd buy it for me, I decided why not. My sister-in-law has SOME similar tastes to me--she loves Harry Potter--and some not so similar. ...Twilight. But from the summary she gave, I thought I'd like it.
In a DYSTOPIAN FUTURE, North America is kinda fucked and no longer the USA. It's now Panem, made up of the Capitol and 13 districts. Except the districts tried to say FUCK OFF to the Capitol so the Capitol kicked their asses. And nuked District 13 or something. Apparently it's smoldering ruins these days.
To remind the remaining 12 districts that they can suck the Capitol's cock, every year they hold the Hunger Games. One boy and one girl are taken from each district to compete in. Well. Televised Battle Royale, basically. They all have to kill each other! But it does take a slightly different take than Battle Royale. The kids in the game can get sponsors, who send them gifts in game. If people like you they can send you water while you're dying of thirst. Medicine for your wounds. So it's more than just capping asses, you have to play the crowd as well. I think that's interesting!
But of course the story gets caught up in romance. Sigh. NOT MY DEAL. I don't mind it as a side note. And I actually enjoyed the main character Katniss' take on the whole thing. Because of her personality, she generally thought of it as a way to control the viewers, to get what she needed from them. It was a tool. I liked that perspective and I bet that DOES happen intentionally on reality shows all the time. People love romance. Except me apparently.
What annoys me about it is at the end, the cliffhanger for the next book isn't something like. How will Katniss readjust to life back home? Will she ever take a proper stand against the Capitol? How will her family react to her return? It's...OH NOES KATNISS TOLD PEETA SHE WASN'T REALLY IN LOVE WITH HIM BUT MIGHT HAVE FEELINGS FOR HIM SHE'S NOT REALLY SURE SINCE SHE WAS BUSY KEEPING THEM FROM FUCKING DYING
I don't really...CARE about that. AT ALL. I almost wish the ending had one of them die rather than have them both live and do that with a SEE NEXT BOOK LOLZ. I don't want to read a second book and have it be all about Peeta's tragic love and Katniss' confusion. If they went on and somehow FUCKED OVER THE GOVERNMENT or something I'd like that. If they became a couple and became a symbol for a revolutionary movement I'd like that! I just don't want an entire book agonizing over their romance.
Really what I want is another Hunger Games book....about the actual Hunger Games. With a different set of kids. They do the Hunger Games every year. Why not make a second book with a focus on another district? I'm more about the KIDS KILLING EACH OTHER ON NATIONAL TV sorry romance fiends.
I liked the book and all! I'm just. Disappointed that it looks like the second book will focus on their tragical love and circumstances instead of political crap or another Hunger Games. I REALLY LIKE Battle Royale type crap and the extra slant of making it a reality show where they audience's opinion can help you is cool to me! And even though everyone else in the world is probably cursing Katniss for thinking of everything in terms of pandering to the crowd instead of seeing Peeta's TRUE FEELINGS!!11 I really enjoyed that aspect of it. Because her personality is very survival oriented and she recognized 'romance' as a strategy to use to make people love her and thus take care of her. Why not use that to her advantage and kiss a boy if it got her what she needed? I don't think it's unreasonable or that she is dumb for not realizing. She was kind of busy NOT DYING as I said to analysis Peeta's TRUE LOVE FEELINGS.
Also the book killed my favorite character but considering the set up that was kind of a given. I would also take a book focusing on her, she was adorable and precious and baaaaawwwl. The parts with her were entirely my favorite. They had a lot of family sistery love going on, which makes me coo SOCUTE and such. Family Love > Romantic Love sorry world.
Anyway! NOT A TERRIBLE READ. You may or may not wanna punch either Katniss or Peeta. But you will probably be a fan of Rue or Thresh or Foxface despite their slim amount of 'screentime.' Also, Gale is hot.
