Because most people don't take it that seriously? Tell your parents you were more in danger of wolf attacks in Petro and Tver cos it was winter, dunno if it would help, but it's probably true. Don't mention elk or moose though, cos they're the real danger (more people are killed by elk than bears in a ratio of 10-1 or something stupid like that, cos they're bloody aggressive things).

well i was in more danger of bear attacks in Petro! there was a mother and her cubs living 15k from the main town.

i'm not even going to mention elk to them.... they'd probably go off and research it on the net....

Nor polar bears, or snakes (yes, even in Canada), or anything remotely threat-posing... :S
