have a beer with da prez

ironically enough, after listening to some of the interviews Obama's given (with the BBC, etc.), i have to say that he totally strikes me as the kind of guy i would love to sit down and have a beer with. OTOH, my idea of who i would like to have a beer with is probably rather different from the previous president's target constituency.

actually, that's a good point: my idea of what "a beer" is in the first place is probably rather different from the previous president's target constituency :)

i would be shocked if we've ever had a president who wouldn't be fun to sit down and have a beer with. presidents are selected for charisma. i've heard opposition-party people say about every president in my lifetime that "he'd charm your socks off" one-on-one in person.

The thing that always amused me about the characterization of Bush as "someone you'd want to have a beer with" is that he doesn't drink.

Which, in theory, is just the sort of person I should want to "have a beer with", because I think beer tastes icky.

Maybe, but when he was still an Illinois State Senator he appeared as a guest on a Chicago Public TV show about local restaurant food along with a few other people who were food critics and columnists. They couldn't air that show because Obama monopolized the entire conversation. They rebroadcast it later after he had won the presidential election.

He may be an awesome leader for our tough times, but I'd guess as a beer drinking buddy he'd be just like any other politician.
