Movies: Alice in Wonderland and Men who stare at Goats

So much to update with! Let's start with the movies I've seen, as my reviews are, traditionally, short.

Men who stare at Goats

I saw this on Friday together with
temve when I went to Frankfurt for her birthday party (and for shopping). More on both... later.

It was an okay movie, I'd say. It was good, but not funny in the least. Yes, I got it, Ewan played a Jedi so jokes involving him not knowing what Jedi are - and other random Jedi allusions - are supposed to be funny. They are - but the problem is, they are only funny the first time. When you get the same damn joke 15 times over, it ceases to be funny and starts to get annoying.

I like my humour more subtle and/or darker, thank you very much. I also like my movies to have a plot. This one felt like it was always on the verge of getting into the plot... and then took the wrong turn and never got anywhere. I actually haven't got the clue what it really was about.

Other than that - it was entertaining, but, I dunno. I think I expected more plot and finer humour?

I'd rate it 6/10. Not a waste of time, but not a movie I'd get on DVD either. One of the weaker George Clooney movies.

Alice in Wonderland

Visually, this was just stunning. The story was decent, the only downside I can think of at the moment is the battle scene at the end. It was a bit of a let down and I think that if you absolutely need a battle scene in a movie, which is fine, do it all or nothing.

Helena Bonham Carter was great as the Red Queen, Anne Hathaway's White Queen seemed more like a vegan lunatic (which is not to say all vegan's are lunatics... just her *G*), which she probably is. It made me laugh how much you could still see Matt Lucas in Tweedledum / Tweedledee.

And as much as I would love to see Amanda Seyfried as Alice one day, Mia Wasikowska did a good job!

7.5/10. Not sure if I'll get it on DVD, as much of the movie's appeal comes from the visuals and my tv set sucks... but I'll probably see it again undubbed, so I can hear Stephen Fry's Cheshire Cat!
