the squid started to get back to removing the wallpaper from the dining room. she also decided that the old chair rail needed to be removed. she thought that meant taking two small pieces off in the corner in which she was working. it ended up being two small-ish pieces and one rather long 10-12 feet long piece. in removing the first piece around one of the windows a, what i would call small (5"-6" rectangular-ish), chunk of plaster decided that it no longer wanted to be part of the wall and left the vicinity of the lower right corner of the window to take up residence with the carpet. it shan't be staying there long. i think the people who owned the house before us had water issues around many of the windows had some crap-ass repair work done when the windows were replaced. i've recently patched the large-ish area near the bathroom window. squid thought she could remove the rest of the wallpaper wipe down the walls and paint the dining room today. i had to convince her that the walls needed to be primed first. she started this project, or rather i should say restarted this project around noon. it may not sound like a large project and i'd agree with that, or similar statement, but it definitely is not a two to three hour project either. the squid also wanted me to put up the new chair rail that we purchased way back when she started this project up today; or at least some of it anyway.

right now in addition to filling the nail holes from the just removed chair rail, i get to patch the wall near the window. not something i was planning on having to do today, but it'll be done. i don't think she'll get to paint today. i fear that the part of the plaster that removed itself from the wall is not the whole of the area the really should be replaced. a much larger area sounds hollow when you tap on it and while it seems not quite ready to take up residence away from the rest of the wall on its own it probably should. at the very least i am going to "test" the edges of the current area to make sure i'm not patching an area where in the next year or so needs to be redone. the patch will need to dry before it can be sanded and to completely dry before any paint can safely be applied to it. if we're lucky by sunday the dining room will be primed.

this would be quite an improvement over it's current state, but i'm sure the squid will be discouraged. she always seems to be. she also has trouble staying with one project, or more accurately decides to start a project without having everything in place to finish the project. this is a bit annoying to me. and it discourages her when the project is not completed.

this afternoon i will spend my time preparing and patching plaster in the dining room. i'm sure she'll still want to prime the wall. i'll have to explain to her that you can't paint plaster until it is totally cured or it will cause the paint to bubble and crack. plus it definitely needs to be primed. you can't paint bare plaster. it tends to eat away at the paint.

i better get started so i can finish before it gets dark outside. it's much more pleasant for me to work while the real light is on. i'll let you know how it turns out.
