mac users: newest opp'y to win shiny dimes

I will probably have to set up a new Mac (g4) and install a bunch of stuff on it. This seems self-explanatory enough from here, even given that i know less than jack patoot about Macs, but a) i know i will run into weird questions and b) i have to couple the vga monitor with said machine which involves a converter (which i will have) and "setting its pins", by which i assume they mean aligning the little slider bars on the thing into the exact right positions - the latter of which no one has told me, or will likely be able to tell me, and i doubt highly that the computer will come with an instruction manual, since i bought it on ebay. Anyone want to help/standby for questions/know anything about these vga-monitor-to-mac-converters and how they're supposed to be "set"?
