Howdy all!
how goes everything up there? I dunno if it is so much a question on my comp faring better on what he eats...apparently most people here like udder...it wasnt so much the member had no money and it was the best he could give us, it was more he figured we'd like it...and for all he knows, we did...shhh, dont tell ;-P. nope, havent started the singing thing yet, and of course wed take our hymn books, there's only 1 hymn ive got memorized in spanish. we'll do it one of these days.
yeah, im deffinately in the same spot as the bishop's son. especially because im training. any slight foibles I may or may not have previously had have gotta be gone. gotta be the best example possible for the nuevitos so that they start off right. on the other hand, i do have 2.5 months left and it gets hard sometimes. I probably make it a little hard on myself as when people ask me how much time Ive got left I usually have no shame/problem in telling them how little Ive got left. ah well.
you got me napolean dynamite!? I wanted to see that movie soooo bad! of course, I probably had plenty oportunities to see it before the mission, but didnt realize til too late how much Id probably like it. keep in mind, if it's a pretty stupid movie, Ill probably love it the first time...ya know, like monty python. I lived in a pench w/ 3 other elders and I could just sit there as the 3 of them could quote pretty much the entire movie, if they had wanted to.
...um, we still havent gone on the dam tour. we're not doin' it until the monday after general conferance. it wouldnt surprise me if the language wasnt horribly different. only because, as we live right across the river, there's probably a lot of similarities in the specific region. otherwise, kirk is deffinately right, each country has it's own words, and flare, and what not. (until I experiance going to the dam, I can say:) it IS way cool, however, when Im in concordia (the main city of our zone) and can look across the river and realize that all the huge buildings I see are part of another country. I can never quite get over it. I mean, as ive been telling the other elders, I cant exactly look off from the east coast and say "Hey! I can see england from here! wait...is that buckingham palace??" I mean, you could see canada, or mexico, depending on where you're at I suppose...but it's not the same.
Well, this past week started off amazing, and ended not so amazing. by wednesday we had 6 people with baptism dates. right now we currently have 0. we went by on tuesday to Graciela and Vanesa, our amazing investigators. they had already read in the book of mormon and said they liked it and all. we then set the baptism date for the 7th of october. but, to get baptized then, they would have had to go to church every week until then, and they didnt go yesterday. :-/.
we had also taught this mom and her 2 kids, and they had originally accepted baptism on the conditions that they felt the gospel was true, but when we went back on saturday the mom dropped the "Im catholic and want to stay catholic" bomb on us. it doesnt help that her church is literally across the street and that ours is over 20 blocks away. It took a good effort to re-commit her to praying to see if she should keep listening to us. I had to tell her "Im not gonna lie, our church is kiiiind of far away, not right across the street like yours, but I know that if you pray and feel that this church is true, God can help you come to our church tomorrow"...and well...they didnt show up either.
we did set up a lady for baptism at her door, which doesnt usually happen. it was nothing more than a "Do you believe in God? if God had one church and you had to be baptized in it, would you? we'd like 4 weeks to be able to come by and teach you how you can know for yourself that the church we represent is God's true church". sometimes it is just that simple, but the question is whether or not she really understood what we were getting at, or just being nice to us. either way, we havent been able to find her home since, so we still havent even taught her any of the lessons.
then there was the family of the girl we baptized not long ago. we had found out that the dead-beat boyfriend guy thing went to jail, which for all intents and purposes is a GOOD thing. but Marina (the girl we baptized) said her mom was still way nerves-on-end about all this and still didnt want us to try to teach her again for now. we were still hopin' marina would come to church with her 2 brothers and her sister, but none of them came, and yesterday we found out that the dead-beat guy was actually let out of jail and is back at the house...so that's that for a while...
basically we were hoping for at least 8 investigators in church yesterday (which would be A. way good, and B. meeting one of 9 weekly mission goals) and we had none.
We're still doin' good though, I guess. We're still pretty sure Graciela and Vanesa are gonna get baptized, we just gotta get them in church, and we're also hopin' to teach the rest of the family. and we've still got lots of other people we need to find and teach. we've been contacting pretty much as many families as we can in the streets, so something should be coming up here pretty soon. we've been workin' our butts off and there's only so long Heavanly Father can be trying our worth to see if we'll stay working hard.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!! yer gettin to be onna thems "old farts" just like that one t-shirt you have (had?). have fun, and behave yourself.
well, I gotta get goin soon. hope everything is still goin good in the northern countries. until next week!

Love,
Elder Casey Adams
