Alaska Loop - 14 Days
Explore this majestic world of temperate rainforests, snow-capped mountains, and crystal-clear seas - home to abundant and untouched wildlife. The Green Tortoise Alaska Loop promises to fulfill every nature lover's dream!
Explore a world of temperate rainforests, snow-capped mountains, crystal clear seas, and abundant wildlife on this amazing adventure to one of the last true wilderness areas on the continent. Embarking from Anchorage, we make tracks for Matanuska Glacier, a 24-mile long blue-ice behemoth, and source of the Matanuska River. A scenic drive takes us through towering Keystone Canyon and past the terminus of the Alaska Pipeline.
From Valdez, take an optional cruise or kayaking trip of the Prince William Sound among icebergs, orcas, and sea lions. During our journey along the scenic Denali Highway, watch for spectacular views of the Alaska Range across the Nenana River Valley. You'll have plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife on the tundra and taiga of Denali National Park, the crown jewel of Alaska's preservation parks. Encompassing six million acres, Denali is home to caribou, moose, wolves, foxes, bald eagles, and bears, as well as wildflowers, spruce groves, and possible views of the three-mile high peak of Mt. McKinley. Options here include backpacking into the trailless backcountry, taking ranger-led discovery hikes, or booking a Nenana River rafting trip or a flightseeing excursion.
More excitement awaits us on the Kenai Peninsula. On the halibut-rich shores of Homer Spit try your luck at landing a big one, or hike the Bishop Beach and Homestead trails. Other options here include kayaking the bay, or taking a water taxi to Kachemak Bay State Park and hiking to alpine lakes and cool glaciers. Learn about sluicing, dredging, and highbanking as you pan for gold in Hope, one of Alaska's first gold rush towns. Go for an optional river rafting trip on Six-Mile Creek, or look for wildlife as you hike along Turnagain Arm to Gull Rock.
After our final day on the Kenai Peninsula, we'll reboard the bus for Anchorage where our time together will end.
I'm ready to make a
reservation!
