my-lady-f.livejournal.com/71788.html , we have received a financial reprieve, at least through the end of the year.
So, as long as nothing BAD happens, (health issues, auto issues, tree fall on house, etc), we should be able to be financially better by the holidays. Then it will be back to stressing.
Helped out with a huge yard sale and got to cherrypick items for my trouble and get a cut of the proceeds. A lot of this stuff was out of a storage unit that my boss bid on, and the contents of many of the boxes were from the 60's and 70"s. About halfway through the sale, we cracked open one box of linens (the lady was wanting curtains and throws and we came across a sleeveless mandarin blue chinese dress that would be suitable to convert into SCA costume.
It was wrapped like a del, that has embroidered dragons (rendered in HEAVY gold thread). Some of the work was coming apart, but repairing couched work is not a problem. It has stains, but it appears to be synthetic fabric, so I have no qualms about handwashing it, and then steaming out the wrinkles. We can take it apart and stretch it out on a frame, and do the repairs and then it can be recut and fitted for
drmrsgal to have for her mongolian persona. I would like for both her and maybe
brennahaldana if she were interested, to take a look at what we have to work with and to see what are the possibilities for this piece. I'll post pictures as soon as I get it looking presentable.
I got a few other cool items too, a matching set of 8 silver napkin rings that appear to be in fairly good condition, some sort of interesting near eastern style bracelet, 2 Monster rolls of cotton herringbone tape that may be used for tent or drapery projects, and a very small cat carrier. So much for de-cluttering!
So all the yard sale stuff and cat stuff I mentioned in my mundane post kept me busy and away from SCA stuff. (not to mention laundry and general housecleaning). Both Davoc and Fenwick came by the yard sale, so I got to see familiar faces. Fenwick came bearing gifts. Our shire recently did inventory, and from that I was bequeathed 2 bottles of rosewater that will go towards spiced nut cooking entry experiments. They have a month before their "best by" date comes about, and our next event is not till January. I also got some mats - like the floppy asian roll up sushi mats. These will be used for an sca feltmaking class down the road.
Did I mention the cool book I got at McKay's for free. Art up close: From Ancient to Modern by Claire d'Harcourt. Interesting.
Well, that's all for now. Wished I'd gotten more of what I wanted to do over the weekend, but I got the most important stuff done (the garage sale and the cats), which is ultimately better than doing 3 less important things.
Also got a call from apprentice sister Randalin, she's coming up for the photo shoot in Knoxville, and will be meeting me to share the ride on the way up. I think we are going to try to do a household photo. We talked for a bit about entering A&S (we both have to submit an Idea for our entry to our peer by the end of the month) and about past experiences. I really believe the first time you try a really new technique, or try entering in a new category, that you should consider it a "sacrifical entry" or a "dry run", to see the real criteria the judges use to evaluate your work in that technique/category.
That being said. I've never entered a cooking entry in A&S. I've cooked plenty in the sca, but entering it will be new. So this will be my "dry run", my "learning experience" as to how to research/document and present my cooking. I've had the opportunity to sit in on some brewing and vintning entries so it will be interestintg to see how that translates. Now I wished I'd paid more attention to the documentation on other entries I've seen in the past.
