Frakking phone monopoly kept me offline for days, but I'm still using the rat icon because bsg_aussiegirl challenged me to write this within a specific number of minutes.
I like Laura's dad. Why, even though her mother was a teacher, do I always picture her father to be the one who taught her the most. Maybe it's the tone of her voice when she talks about him being a fight fan, and adoring him.
And I love that Disquiet scene. I'm picky about fics set during/around it, so I'm glad you do it justice.
She looks in Bill's eyes and sees what he sees: brains, bones, duty, disease, and always her beauty.
With a shock she understands.
What she's seeing is home.
Ahhh, not only are you back, but you're still writing almost romantic for me!
I love how you described Laura's running, having all those thoughts comming up, running will do that, also a great way to organize you thoughts. And then her looking in Bill's eyes, him hiding nothing, and her realizing with a shock *happy sigh*
I'm not a runner any more, but I agree -- when I need to think thinky thoughts, I go out for a long walk. And here's poor Laura, trying to think, when the answer's standing right in her path, all steely determination and freshly brushed teeth.
The header is the work of bugsfic. Isn't she amazing? I told her what quote and screen cap I wanted, and she gave me the mood I was dreaming of, even though I wasn't articulating it very well.

Besides, I don't think you'll like my next ficlet, since it's fast and rough and not romantic. Hell, it's not even A/R.

their search for a home was never about finding Earth
So that explains how Pythia could be right -- Laura's promised land, her home, that last commitment to Bill, does not happen in her lifetime.
mistakes perceived and actual which have shaped who they have become
Yep! The advantage of age is realizing that your mistakes are an essential part of who you've become.

That's how I saw it. Laura's promised land is that cabin by the lake with Bill, the well earned retirement, together, that they never got.
