Woadwaxen, a.k.a. Dyers Greenwood

Jul 20, 2008 16:37

We have a woadwaxen (also called dyers greenwood) plant growing wild in our backyard. The kids and I harvested plant tops (shown).

We pre-treated the wool yarn with an alum mordant. Here is the yarn simmering away in the dye pot.

We followed up with an iron modifier, and voila! This is the finished product! Green wool yarn! Please pardon the out of focus shot. It is fuzzy, but shows the color well.

One thing I find neat about using an iron modifier is how the color continues to 'sadden' after the modifier is applied. The initial application changes the color, then it slowly deepens, deepens deepens...really cool:)
