This is not a party, where people know your name...
March marched through rather quickly, and I am eternally unprepared. I did finish the most recent round of edits to A Ragged Magic, and even sent them to my Fabulous Editor Jak on time (!). Since it took me the 8 weeks I said it would (although not the 6 weeks I was hoping for, partly due to my own giant freak outs, partly due to the fact that Writing Is Hard Work, Man), I feel pretty good about myself.
Except for the part that as I was finishing up the last read-through, changing words here and there and fiddling with awkward sentences and hoping I was making things better and not worse, I was coming down with the worst cold I’ve had in some time. I blame Marlo and Karen at dance - and whomever they brought it in from. I swear I wash my hands after class and everything. Although Karen did suggest I stop licking the floor. Ah, well. At least I didn't end up with pneumonia, like *some* over-achievers. Just a sinus infection and the Cough that Coughed Schenectady. So, headache and fever and exhaustion coming on, I sent the file off to Jak on the 16th, and promptly collapsed onto the couch for 8 days. Whee.
It’s been a week since I came back to work, and I’m still not fully recovered. My voice is gravelly, my lungs are still shot, and I run out of energy for anything physical much faster than I ought to. It’s like I’m old and stuff. Or a smoker. But THOSE EDITS GOT DONE GOD DAMN, and so I’m still pretty proud of myself, even if I did run myself into the ground to do it. Jak says he will let me know if I need another (hopefully not as large) edit pass, but if I don’t, it will be time for copy edits and nit picking. So to celebrate, now that I’m no longer staring into space and drooling on myself as a recreational pastime, I’m playing around with the outline for the second book. That’s right, I’m OUTLINING, BITCHES. Poorly, and with a lot of (yadda hoodie) and (whatshername) and (things happen here), but I’m doing it. Because THIS time, I’m going to finish this sequel. Galdarmit. Road map outline ahoy, and word to your notebook. Or something.
I managed to get Scott sick with the sickness as well, because this bug is dang nasty and there wasn’t any avoiding it. He went from taking care of me to lying on the couch and hacking up his own lungs. He’s slowly recovering as well, about a week behind me. Poor Mr. Sweetie. But he managed to take himself to Emerald City Comic Con for his panels this past weekend, and he had a good time, aided by his own pack of cough drops and tissues. He talked books and writing, and I stayed home. Because not everyone is cool enough to go to ECCC, and also I had rehearsal and this stupid cold.
In other marching to (Pretoria) April news, rehearsals for this year’s eXit SPACE show are in full swing. And by swing, I mean I had to miss or cancel four rehearsals (one for each piece) while I was sick, and struggle through the rehearsals last week with tissues and cough drops in my pockets, and the fun of sinus pressure when you're working out. Wheeeee. But the pieces are all totally super-cool, and I’m so excited to dig into them further. We are going to rock it this year, guys. You should most definitely come. The evening shows are May 30th - May 31st, and there are family matinees on May 31st and June 1st. All the shows will knock your socks off, and all four of my pieces are going to be in both evening shows. I’m in 2 modern pieces, one of which was choreographed by me, along with the help of my dancers. It's the piece I made for Jay Lake, and I'm super nervous to perform it in front of a live audience, and so grateful to Marlo for the opportunity. I’m also in 2 jazz pieces, one of which is a jazz vs ballet dance-off to music from West Side Story, and the other is a giant Vaudevillian bunch of hilarity and awesomeosity, and you will love every dang second of it, because you just won’t be able to help yourselves. Come watch! I promise to smile big for y’all. Except for in those places where smiling big would be weirdly inappropriate to the dance. Then I will glower or moodily dancer-stare into the distance, as directed. It'll be great!
Happy April, and Happy Spring Finally, and Happy Hey I Did it I Totally Made a Deadline, and Happy Dancing. Lots of happy to everyone.
