I just defriended someone. It is something I rarely do. But I found more and more that this person's page contained politics I could not support, comments that supported torture and were violently and shamelessly partisan, and a whole view of the world that I could not bear. I am not, and I have never been, a fan of American right-wing machismo and economic anarchy. The last straw came when a thread, supposedly concerned with the deficiencies of Islam, was allowed to turn into a vicious and mendacious display of Christianity-bashing, with the vile name of Richard Dawkins, the Titus Oates of the day, waved like a banner. There is no need for me to put up with this sort of crap in my friends page; and it makes a mockery of its title - for some persons and some views, it is more sensible to thank the Devil than God. It is not the former friend himself that I mind, so much as his quite extraordinary ability to attract obnoxious people. His comments thread are execrable, and frankly, that must mean something. It certainly means that I no longer want to be seen in the company of the people who comment there.
