Sometimes I forget that Spangel is actually canon.
I guess that's kind of weird, especially considering that I write Spangel (or something like it, anyway).
Maybe it's because it's always treated really casually in canon. It's just a thing that happened, nothing more. Angel seems slightly embarassed by it and doesn't really want to discuss and that Spike will talk about it if asked directly, and that's really about it. It never comes up as anything big, it never really relates to the plot, and it definitely never is the plot.
But I think really one of the things that makes me forget about it is that, within the series, it's pretty much angst-free. Their relationship as a whole can be kind of angsty, with the fucked up family tree and the abandonment issues and the constant competition, but their sexual relationship is actually completely divoreced from this.
There's a part of my brain that, I guess, sort of refuses to believe or even process that idea that Spike could successfully manage a one-night stand.
Yes, he never tried to get a relationship out of Anya, but that was not a particularly successful endeavor and there was a lot of angst afterwards, just not between them.
He's so much of a romantic that the idea that, at one point, he crawled in and out of bed with Angel, and never wanted something more from it, won't stick in my mind.
Angel, yes. I don't have any troubles seeing Angel or Angelus doing this.
Actually, I don't think there was any point at all when I imagined it being different from Angel's side.
But I always expect something more from Spike when it comes up, and it never does. I mean, he seems genuinly okay with not pursing anything more with Angel.
Spike, for the most part, grabs tightly on to anysemblancee of a relationship he can find and hangs tight until it's absolutely impossible for him to hold on any more. All of his relationships end up abusive, Dru, Harm, Buffy, but he refuses to see that.
I definitely think that Spike cares about Angel(us). I mean, their reunion in 2.03 "School Hard" comes to mind, when Spike is very excited to see Angel. And again in 2.14 "Innocence" when Angelus returns. A lot of season five of Ats is spent exploring their relationship with one another.
Has Spike given up at this point in the series? I know he's bad at taking 'no' for an answer, but over a century of being shot down can discourage even the most stubborn suitors. Maybe the writers are sitting on it so it can get fully explored later? Or, maybe it genuinly was never anything more than sex. Maybe it really was entirely seperate from the rest of their relationship.
