Announcement: "In the Flow, Los Angeles Artists Supporting HIV/AIDS"

Nov 30, 2011 00:09

Dear Friends,

You are all invited to a very special event, one that represents a notable moment in my fledgling art career: three of my newest paintings will be featured at the Fremont Gallery in South Pasadena, located at 812 Fremont Ave, Suite No. 100, South Pasadena, CA 91030. The exhibit is"In the Flow, Los Angeles Artists Supporting HIV/AIDS," which runs from December 3rd to December 12, 2011. A feature on the event can be seen in the December 1st, World AIDS Day issue of Pasadena Weekly.

The artists reception will be held this Saturday, December 3rd, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. If you are located in Southern California, and have the evening free, I would gratefully appreciate your attendance and support at this event. You will be able to view my new, experimental paintings (actually, the first traditional pieces I have completed since 2004!) and mingle with other artists, including celebrated Los Angeles artist Joey Terril. The exhibition also features works by Aurora Filipescu, Dean Triolo, Hector Silva, Ariel Vargassal, Andrea Shoening, Vlasta, and others.

The exhibition is a fundraiser for two great community-based organizations, Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team (APAIT) Health Center, and Whittier Rio Hondo AIDS Project. As you probably already know, I am a clinical case manager at APAIT Health Center, and I provide much-needed, direct services to medically and socially underprivileged people living with HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles County. As someone working with the HIV/AIDS clients of one of the benefiting organizations, I can confidently say that the funds generated by this fundraiser will go a long way, and provide much-needed services for this community.

If you cannot come by the artists' reception, please do consider visiting the exhibit between December 3rd and December 12th, 2011.

About the 2011 "In the Flow" Series: a Study on Ambivalence and Ambiguity

My work is very frequently about the human condition, examined through the myriad expressions of human life and its challenges as represented in literature and popular culture. In this series, I am particularly interested in the feeling of ambivalence, and frequently use popular culture characters to mirror our own emotional ambiguities. For this show, I use original characters and faces to explore the theme of "in the flow," which I have chosen to interpret as the feeling of ambivalence as one encounters and negotiates the ebbs and "flows" of their individual life experiences.

The nature of ambivalence and ambiguity is also a large part of my work as an HIV/AIDS case manager. In order to bring about behavioral changes, I assist clients in the identification of ambivalence regarding behavior. This people-centered and evocative method of collaborative conversation is a technique called Motivational Interviewing, which seeks to draw behavior change from the person's own motivation and commitment. It is a very effective method designed to strengthen an individual's motivation and movement towards a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person's own arguments for change from their state of ambivalence.

Facts about this series:
  • First original paintings available, ever, for purchase. I have never offered to sell previous traditional paintings, despite receiving many offers (including a blank check, once!)

  • I had taken a hiatus from traditional painting since 2004, preferring instead to develop my technique in digital oil painting and photography. This series of paintings are my first completed paintings since 2004.

If you are interested in purchasing or making a bid on any of the "In the Flow" series paintings, please contact me at foxestacado@gmail.com or by sending me an LJ message.

Thank you for your interest in my art. I hope you will consider coming to the Opening Reception of "In the Flow, Los Angeles Artists Supporting HIV/AIDS" on December 3rd, 2011, 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Please feel free to link this post to anyone you believe would be interested in these paintings or attending this event.

Sincerely yours,
