"I b'ain't stoopid, I's just iggerant..."
For reasons that I needn't go into here, I got into a conversation with a delivery man the other night.
Him: So how long have you been here?
Me: Oh, about four or five years.
Him: And where do you come from?
Me (silently to myself): sigh, here we go again
Me (out loud to him): Australia.
Him: *pause*
Him: You don't look Australian.
Me: *eyeroll*
Me (stirring a bit because I'm in an ornery mood): So what do Australians look like, then?
Him (clearly flummoxed): D'uuhhhh...
Him (attempting a brave recovery): You know, like on Home and Away.
Me: *rolls the other eye*
Me (in an unaccustomed moment of kindness): Well, Australia is very multi-cultural these days, you know. In fact the original inhabitants are now a very small percentage of the population.
Him: Original inhabitants?
Me: Of Australia.
Him: Oh, you mean like convicts and them lot?
Owwww, the stupid... excuse me, the iggerant, IT BURNS!
(Somewhat with laughter, in this case, it must be admitted.)
