Around and About the Farm

It's been a cold January and February, but spring is starting to poke out tiny green tendrils.  We have been working on the herb garden and in the greenhouse, getting things prepped for the coming season.  But, more on those later...  Here's some pics from around and about the farm.

January 2009.  It looks so pretty, but it was SO cold.  Still, check out the grass!  I swear it grows under the snow.

I took this picture because about 13 years ago I put a willow twig into the ground.  For some reason I didn't just throw it on the compost heap, but jammed it into the ground.  Now look at it.  It's 9 or 10 inches across!

And finally, today we had a couple of daylight visitors to the farm.  Spring must be coming, because these beauties are pairing up and getting ready to start a family.  I don't know if this is the male or the female.  The coyote is about the size of Reyna (30-40 pounds) with wonderful long legs and a gorgeous snout.  Unfortunately the picture isn't that great, because we were so struck with awe and delight watching it hunt voles in the manure piles that we forgot to collect the camera.  The coyote's mate stayed within view, but much further away from the house.  I finally drove the car out of the driveway to scare the coyote back into our fields and away from the roads.

And yes, we aren't scared of these beautiful animals.  We keep our livestock in good fences.  I might feel different if they take a few chickens, but right now I'm just glad to have the wildlife around and be able to offer them a vole dinner from time to time.
