On Thursday, I went to the
Affordable Art Fair. This is a misnomer, or rather I am apparently less well-off than the average attendee, because "a few thousand dollars," while I'm sure a total steal on the real art market, IS NOT MY DEFINITION OF AFFORDABLE. Several of the pieces cost like six months' rent. So... yeah. Did not purchase anything!
I did, however, look at a lot of absolutely gorgeous collage work (some cut-paper, some mixed-media), and the best part was that because they were selling the work, I could go up to it, I could examine the detail, I could take pictures. I love being that close and just seeing how they do what they do and figuring out how I could take that idea and make something myself.
Also, while I am obviously nowhere near that level of talent or confidence, it was good and reaffirming to see that people can make money off the kind of thing that I do for fun. (Seriously, I am not taking away from the amount of skill on display there, but fairly simple 4x6 cut-paper collages for $150-$300?) So that actually helped push me the rest of the way toward signing up for
helpthesouth last night (
my thread is here!), offering collages for up to three highest three bidders. Starting at $10. :D? :D?
This has been making the rounds, but if you missed it,
Racialicious talks about how great Astrid is and it includes a link to the actress's website, where she has a webcomic, one of which features her and her girlfriend inviting Kanye West over because he needs a friend. JASIKA NICOLE IF YOU WERE ANY GREATER THE WORLD WOULD IMPLODE.
I don't know if I agree with the article on HOW positive Astrid's portrayal is, but I think that's mostly because I wish the show had more Astrid and less Peter, and am at this juncture much more interested in her emotional life than the Bishops'. That said, I do agree with the article that she's basically the most well-adjusted person in the show, and I recognize it's harder to mine drama out of someone who's just awesome and not completely broken the way Peter, Olivia, and Walter are.
That said, I watched last night's episode.
FRINGE WHAT WAS THAT I DON'T EVEN.
I watched late last night, so I'm pretending it's just my sleepy-brain that made me so confused, but that is clearly just me being in denial. Right now all I have are
references to Dawson's Creek and approximately three Alias episodes' worth of frysquinting at the logic- which, if you are familiar with Alias, you know is A LOT OF FRYSQUINT.GIF
I've read a bunch of responses to the episode, which love it and hate it to varying degrees, but I don't see too many that point to the reason it bugged me: this is Olivia's show. This entire show is about OLIVIA FUCKING DUNHAM, superhero and ace detective and protector of the weak. This episode seemed more like it was about Peter Bishop. And, you know, I love me some Pacey, but NOT HIS SHOW, and NOT SEASON HIS FINALE. >:(
(I find it hilarious that when I first watched, I was all "Okay, Olivia seems great, but moar Pacey?" and now I'm like "Go away, Pacey. NEEDS MOAR OLIVIA." Oh show.)
I don't think I like that Olivia and Peter are married in the future, because- oh god I cannot believe I'm about to say this- combined with Peter having to make a different choice in the present, it makes me think that this is a rip-off of Roswell season two, and while we all know that that is basically my favorite plot arc in any season ever due to its complete lack of logical follow-through, that's not actually what I want in my Fringe. And also because I'm not sure I believe that Olivia WANTS that kind of relationship- it seems more like something Peter (or Fauxlivia!) wants than something our Olivia does. But largely the Roswell thing.
I did like bb!Agent Dunham and Agent Astrid, but I'm not sure why Astrid isn't higher on the totem pole of Fringe in fifteen years. ASTRID IS GREAT. SHE SHOULD RUN THE FRINGE DIVISION. AND MAYBE ALSO THE WORLD.
In conclusion, anyone who doesn't love Astrid is a horrible person and probably a terrorist.
I cannot get over how gorgeous it is outside. It's sunny, and not too warm but not too cool, and while I tend to be someone who prefers the winter, I have to admit it's lovely outside. I'm contemplating ignoring my seasonal allergies (SHUT UP I AM NOT SICK IT'S JUST ALLERGIES), getting dressed, and spending the day hanging out at the park.
But first I have to watch Fringe again.
