i'm teaching again on monday!
CELTA instructor two (chris is done in denver) is stuck in france -- missed her flight -- until tuesday. Giles was in a bind, as this session's students are supposed to observe the tutors' two-hour lesson on Monday.
Cara and I stepped in and are each taking a two-hour class. I'm using the hypothetical listening skills assignment I'd just created, plus an hour of relevant grammar beforehand. It's perfect, too: it's the chapter they skipped, and it's exactly the grammar form this song uses (second conditional: that is to say, "if I had a million dollars, I would be rich").
Tamara gave me a book written, vaguely autobiographically, by a Jew for Jesus about some guy's daughter who one night came home believing in HaySoos and ended up converting the whole family. On the subject of just about anything else I'm open-minded, but I cannot accept someone who believes they can hold on to their Judaism in culture, but not in faith -- not just "not in faith" (because that encompasses atheists, with no faith at all, and I don't mind them as much) but in ACTIVE faith in something that's NOT what our books say.
I'm losing coherence... so.....
Nawal brought "Harisa"? --it's some sort of cake -- for everyone today. I brought my truffles, and Nawal and Jamal also brought carvings for everyone. The family business is little carvings of olive wood. Sadly, all but two (I've seen their brochure) are pretty strongly Christian. Still, it's a pretty little Nativity ornament. For now, I'll stick it somewhere respectful, right next to the St Brigid's cross that my hostbrother Jonathan gave me in Ireland.
the truffles were a great hit, as they always are.
Mexican food was crappy, but maybe that was just the taco salads Cara and I got (next two meals together: sushi and fajitas). We also ended up being the only two to split the cost of a pitcher of margaritas, though I only had one since I drove. We went to Falling Rock after the tearful goodbyes (and Debbie and I having the Messianic Jew conversation) and hung outside, watched ESPN and heard the din from Coors Field as the Rockies won, and met Cara's boyfriend. Now I'm home and i'm going to get six hours of sleep before Emma comes so Clay can pick us up and we go to the farmers' market and then the Barn for the weekend.
Exciting times.
Also, I may have the starts of a plan for going to California.
good day,
