About Names

Apr 03, 2009 01:07

I didn't ask anyone about posting this, so I hope it's all right. I thought it might be fun as well as a way to help get the cogs turning for those finishing up apps for damned that haven't yet thought up "real" names for their character.

I propose a sort of meme. List the names of your characters and their "real" names, as well as the reason you ( Read more... )

Aoyagi Ritsuka = Jordan Becker.
・ No real reason. I just wanted a somewhat ambiguous name for him. :|b And one that was pretty normal.

Okita Souji = Julian Ikeda.
・ I'm so mean. Ikeda comes from the name of the inn the Shinsengumi invaded in the 1864 incident; and the one where Okita Souji reportedly collapsed from his tuberculosis. Julian is because Emi and I thought he needed a suitably flouncy name. :Db

Morinozuka Takashi = William "Will" Banks.
・ I wanted a name that could shorten well, so William to Will. Banks was...random. Idek.

Grell Sutcliff = Geoffrey Burnett.
・ Geoffrey has the same starting letter as Grell. And Burnett is the last name of Angelina Darres' husband. Grell worked in the Burnett Estate, so I thought "lulz."

And currently considering Franziska von Karma as Wilhelmina von Richter which means "resolute protector" and "judge." :[

Monkey D. Luffy -- Timothy Gatz. I didn't think too hard about this one, to be honest. I could just see him being named Timothy, and "Gatz" was shamelessly lifted from The Great Gatsby.

Obi-Wan Kenobi -- Ezra Klein. I just thought it suited him, idk. Ezra is an older name that might hint at some kind of wisdom. As for the last name, I pretty much just tooled around until I stumbled across it, and I decided I liked the two names together.

Claude C. Kenni -- Thomas Appleby. He seemed like he could pass as a Thomas, and it's such a bright, happy name. Plus the color red is often associated with him, so I thought the apple imagery worked well.

And as far as who I'm apping for this cycle...

Apollo Justice -- Ernest Ballard. I didn't have to spend much time on this one at all. Apollo can be so earnest at times, and it shortens well to "Ernie" (if, you know, he ever gets Trucy for a visitor or something). And "Ballard" is a crappy pun off the word "ballad", which, when done softly, is probably the sort of music he prefers ( ... )

Sai (tsunagari) - Simon Pastello - Oh man, this name is so silly. He was my first character, though, so I think I deserve some slack. Simon is just a favorite name of mine, and it could easily be shortened to sound like "Sai" so that the nurses might consider it a nickname. Pastello is just... hahaha... Pastels, right? Because he's an artist? Yeah, it's pretty lame.

Leon (word_of_death) - Daniel Herald - This one's much better. Daniel was chosen because Leon means Lion. Daniel in the lion's den? Don't usually go biblical, but whatever. Herald is actually derived from "Heraldry" which is what the magic in Star Ocean the Second Story was originally called.

Brooklyn (manhattan_red) - Jeffrey Brockland - Brook's voice actor is Jeff Bennet, so that's where I grabbed his first name from. Brockland was one of the older names for the Brooklyn district.

Matt (whohitreset) - Miles Jarvis - This one follows the trend most of the Wammy's kids were using at Damned. His ACTUAL real name is Mail Jeevas, so I just turned that into something more natural looking. BONUS: His alias ( ... )

Tanaka (Takeshi Soto) - Not a lot of thought went into this one, actually. I think I just put slapped together something that was A) a valid Japanese name, and B) not taken by anyone notable enough to be an allusion.

Willy Wonka (Eugene Welles) - The Eugene part was a callback to Gene Wilder, who (despite my usual bibliocentrism + ♥ for Dahl's Wonka) still holds a special place in my concept of the character. The last name, on the other hand, is there for the eventual visitor shift thread; when not-Charlie inevitably shows up to visit Wonka, I wanted to be able to take advantage of the Bucket/Well wordplay. >_>

Clark Kent/"Kal Jefferson" - kind of unoriginal. Clark's Kryptonian name is Kal-El (of the House of El, so Kal's his first name). Jefferson just sounded pretty average and forgettable.

Dean Winchester/"Eric Derringer" - basically just a play on "Rick Derringer", who sang "Hoochie Koo". Also a name that Dean would recognize and also think it's not too far a stretch to think he'd use it as an alias, even if he doesn't believe he was checked into Landels by his "family".
