About Names

Apr 03, 2009 01:07

I didn't ask anyone about posting this, so I hope it's all right. I thought it might be fun as well as a way to help get the cogs turning for those finishing up apps for damned that haven't yet thought up "real" names for their character.

I propose a sort of meme. List the names of your characters and their "real" names, as well as the reason you ( Read more... )

Sai (tsunagari) - Simon Pastello - Oh man, this name is so silly. He was my first character, though, so I think I deserve some slack. Simon is just a favorite name of mine, and it could easily be shortened to sound like "Sai" so that the nurses might consider it a nickname. Pastello is just... hahaha... Pastels, right? Because he's an artist? Yeah, it's pretty lame.

Leon (word_of_death) - Daniel Herald - This one's much better. Daniel was chosen because Leon means Lion. Daniel in the lion's den? Don't usually go biblical, but whatever. Herald is actually derived from "Heraldry" which is what the magic in Star Ocean the Second Story was originally called.

Brooklyn (manhattan_red) - Jeffrey Brockland - Brook's voice actor is Jeff Bennet, so that's where I grabbed his first name from. Brockland was one of the older names for the Brooklyn district.

Matt (whohitreset) - Miles Jarvis - This one follows the trend most of the Wammy's kids were using at Damned. His ACTUAL real name is Mail Jeevas, so I just turned that into something more natural looking. BONUS: His alias, "Robin Prower" is the ultimate sidekick name, taken from Batman's Robin and Miles "Tails" Prower from Sonic the Hedgehog. This was done before all the extra fourth wall rules so he can't actually make the connection.

Callisto (givemeoblivion) - Sarah Burns - Cirra was the name of the town Callisto was born in, the one Xena's army burned to the ground. It pisses her off to have a name that sounds like it. :| Burns is a given. Callisto has a thing for fire.

Cross (overdoingit) - Enoch McCree - Enoch was the name of Metatron's mortal form in the actual mythos, so I wanted to include that in Cross's name since that's the angel he's the human incarnation of. The last name McCree grounds the name a bit more and makes him sound less like this unusual entity and more like someone I grabbed off a moor somewhere. "Cree" can be a reference to crown, which is Metatron's symbol.

Yousuke (guyslikegames) - Oscar ???? - I'm still working on coming up with a last name, but I've settled on Oscar for his first one. It's kind of lulzy, but it works. It goes with the fandom connection of him to the trash can at the beginning of the game. XD And there's that P4/Sesame Street pic...

Hey, I'd rank it as base canardary for a nerd like Matt to not get that kind of wordplay eventually. XD

I am. -_-

The funny thing is, it came to mind while randomly thinking of something completely different. It was like this. My husband had a book on the counter in the bathroom. I remembered him saying the son of the author had written some crappy sequels. This reminded me of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, which also had sequels written by a child of the author. This reminded me of Racso, the main character from the first sequel that I loved as a kid. Racso is Oscar backwards (he didn't like his real name). But then I'd also been working on my Yousuke app and I was suddenly like "Oscar would be a good "real" name for him..."

I'm thinking I might go Japanese with Yousuke's last name and make it Deyama, in homage to Deyama Toshimitsu (Toshi), the lead singer of X Japan. Since Yousuke's big on music and all.
